Looking Glass Photography » Kelowna Wedding and Family Photographer

  • About Us

I have been staring at this blank "About" page for about an hour trying to figure out how to express what Looking Glass Photography is "about".  It's difficult.  The easiest explanation is that we are about photographing weddings and families.  Or about sharing special moments.  While all this sounds good on a marketing side it doesn't even begin to express our passion for this profession.

My wife and I love photography.  We were drawn to this profession because we wanted to do something that we were passionate about and we wanted to do it together.  We DO love to share the special and intimate moments that people allow us to be a part of, and that is definitely one of the reasons we do it.  But that doesn't cover all of it.

A few years ago Karen and I were woken in the middle of the night to the sounds of loud knocking on our apartment door. The faint sounds of a fire alarm were coming from the hallway and the man at the door was yelling at us to leave the building telling us there was a fire. In our sleepy haze we quickly jumped out of bed, threw on our clothes, grabbed our wedding album and hurried outside to see the roof of the building covered in flames. As we stood there next to our neighbors we noticed that the only things we cared about were not leaving the house naked and that our wedding album was safe. I looked at our newly homeless neighbors and noticed that we weren't the only ones (wearing clothes) with pictures and albums in hand. This really stuck with me.  Pictures matter.  Memories matter. Clothes also matter.

Put simply Looking Glass Photography is Brodie and Karen Isaac from Kelowna B.C..  We know that EVERYONE is "about" cherishing their memories and keeping them safe and we take the responsibility of recording those moments very seriously. What WE are "about" is our love for each other, our wonderful daughter, and our desire to live a simple and happy life.  But isn't that what we are all "about"?

Nina and Tayorr : Home is where the Hearrt is.

Nina and Taylorr are such a great couple!  There is no doubt in my mind that they are very very much in love, and they will remain that way for a very very long time.  Some of you may recognize Nina as our second shooter and Photowall operator. Others will recognize her as the daughter of the recently “Engaged” Rhea. To Karen and I she is our niece, our friend, and a much beloved member of our family.  But to Sienna she will always be known as “The Nina”.

Until early this year Taylorr lived in Calgary alone, as his work required him to be available on a moment’s notice.  Nina has since moved to Calgary so they could be closer together but while they were separated they both would eagerly look forward to his next trip back home so that, when he arrived, they could spend every second of the day attached at each others hip.  Now each time they come back to Kelowna to visit all of their friends and family (and seriously awesome Aunt and Uncle I might add), they are reminded of those long days apart, and have a greater appreciation for the time they have together.

When we met up with them downtown it was apparent that they were both very excited to do the shoot and were raring to go!  We walked around downtown for about an hour taking pics as they cuddled and laughed and confirmed our stance that they not only loved each other, but loved being “Home” together.  As we toured around city park downtown, the sun began to disappear behind the hills and much to our (and their) dismay we had to call it quits.  But the fun didn’t end there, afterwards we went to Earls, caught up over a couple of drinks, and shared a “must have” Kelowna only menu item, which capped off a very fun night!

Nina and Taylorr are so great together.  As Nina’s Aunt and Uncle we can be a little protective, but we have no reservations about Taylorr, he is so kind, gentle, and loving towards Nina, and thats more than we could ever ask for.  Now that they live in Calgary we don’t see as much of them as we like, but (much like they used to) we look forward to the time they spend with us here at home.

While long distant relationships are notoriously tough for most couples, Nina and Taylorr’s love seems to have just gotten stronger.  When they were apart Taylorr’s home was where “The Nina” was.  Now that they are both together I think that they would both agree that “Home is where the Hearrt is!”

Our Family

Sienna’s Nana and Grandma are constantly reminding us that since I am always behind the camera, we don’t really have a lot of photo’s of us together as a family. In order to fix that we thought we would try to do some “self-portrait” style pictures with all of us crowded together on Sienna’s tiny single bed.

I grabbed my camera, held it upside down, used my thumb to press the shutter button and we were off!

We had so much fun!

Derek and Rhea: “Engaged”!

It was SO hot when we did this shoot with Derek and Rhea on Knox mountain.  Maybe it was because, being on a mountain, we were THAT much closer to the sun, or maybe it was because it was 34 degrees in the shade;  for whatever reason it was almost unbearably hot.  We even took a break halfway through our photo shoot so we could sit in our vehicle with the A/C on in order to cool off.  In short: we melted.  But we wouldn’t let a little sun stroke beat us, no way!  We were determined to get this shoot, to capture the love that these two have for each other.  And in my opinion, we did!

But let’s back up a bit. Derek and Rhea are very close to us, you see Derek is my wife Karen’s brother, and when we told our daughter Sienna that her “Incle” was finally getting married to her Aunty Rhea she looked at us incredibly confused.  “What do you mean getting married?  They aren’t already??!?”  You see, one month before Sienna was born Derek told us about a wonderful woman he had met, and her 3 awesome kids.  And in the 7 years since they all entered our lives Sienna has always known Rhea to be her aunt, and Rhiannon, Nina, and Lara to be her cousins.  Now this wasn’t by accident. When we first met the whole family we instantly fell in love, and for all intents and purposes they are, and always have been, members of our family.  As much as Rhea has watched our beloved Sienna grow up, we have also watched her girls grow into the smart, caring and wonderful young women they are today.  So when WE heard the news that Derek and Rhea were going to “make it official” we were ecstatic! We also INSISTED we do their photos for them.

So here are their engagement photo’s, and even if Sienna thought they were already married, she now knows that Derek and Rhea are “Engaged”

Krista + Ryan – Waterfront Park / Gallagher’s Canyon

My phone rang on a Saturday night and when I answered my niece Rhiannon was on the other end pleading with me to help out her friends Krista and Ryan who were to be married in two weeks and did not have a photographer.  I put the phone to my side to confirm with Karen whether or not we had plans for that day and after assuring me we did not I told Rhiannon that we would gladly meet up with Krista and Ryan to flesh out the details.  I would later find out that Krista was intimately familiar with our entire family’s teeth as she was an assistant for our family dentist, and most importantly Sienna LOVED her!

When we met with them they told us how grateful they were that we were willing to help them out and then informed us that we would only need to be there for a couple of hours to get some shots before the wedding and during the ceremony. Karen and I looked at each other and smiled.  We told them that it was our philosophy to record the day’s events from the getting ready stages to the reception and that this was very important to us.  We believe that it is a wedding photographers duty to create a story for the day.  After the wedding we want to be able to present an Album to our couples that continually reminds them of the fun they had and the people they spent their day with.  If you have read our “About” page you know how important we feel an Album truly is.

They were slightly stunned but incredibly pleased.  Unfortunately the wedding was only 2 weeks out and the timeline was already set.  We did our best to work with them in order to fit in time for photos and they were both extremely helpful and easygoing about accommodating our “suggestions”.  We liked them already!

The wedding day was so much fun!  Krista and Ryan are both such great people, their families are great people, their bridal party members are great people, everyone was GREAT!  Krista looked absolutely stunning in her dress and Ryan made a very dapper groom.  By the time the reception came we had successfully juggled a very frantic, very fun (and very HOT) day.  While everyone was eating Karen and I ducked out because we were planning to surprise Krista and Ryan with a same day slideshow (and who wants pictures of themselves with food in their mouth..).  When it was complete we threw it on (after some minor projector related technical difficulties) and watched their reactions as they relived their very special day.

We hope that the pictures do justice to the love that these two obviously have for each other.

Congratulations Krista and Ryan!

Brett + Cheryl – Summerhill Pyramid Winery/Gallagher’s Canyon

It was a sunny day in July, one of the few we had that month.  We joined Cheryl and her bridesmaids first thing to capture their morning together getting ready for the big day.  After stopping in to see the groom and his men for a few minutes, we made our way to the brides home to capture the all important first shots in her stunning gown.  I have to say, I have never seen a more relaxed bride, the music was pumping and she was just taking in the whole day!  When the ceremony began the smile on Brett’s face as he saw his beautiful bride for the first time was a magical moment, one I will not soon forget.  The wedding was a true representation of the bride and groom; fun, lively and full of love.  Congratulations to the happy couple!
